The Ultimate Global Game Day French Fry Playbook

May 29, 2026

Game day calls for something easy, a little indulgent, and built for sharing—and a tray of hot, crispy fries always delivers. Whether you're watching every second on the edge of your seat or just showing up for the snacks, fries are the kind of food everyone gravitates toward. They can be piled high, dressed up with bold toppings, or kept simple with the perfect dip. Unfussy, reliable, and endlessly versatile, fries are always welcome at the table.

And when the game brings countries from around the world together, fries become something even more powerful: a universal love language for global sports fans. Their widespread appeal makes them the perfect canvas for international flavors and shared moments.

The World’s #1 Sport Perfectly Pairs With The World’s #1 Potato Dish

As the maker of one in four French fries around the world, we know just how universal that love really is. Our latest Global Spud Report confirmed what we’ve long believed - fries rank as the #1 preferred potato dish across every country surveyed. And the ways people enjoy them are just as diverse as the teams competing:

Australia: 43% dip their fries in ice cream—more than any other country

Netherlands: 41% consider fries a main course, not just a side

Brazil: 69% admit to double dipping

Argentina: 84% reach for fries as a late-night snack

With inspiration from fans around the world, we asked Chef Mark to reimagine fries as the centerpiece of your watch party - bringing global flavor, bold combinations, and low-effort ideas together in one unforgettable spread.

  1. Think of fries as your starting point.
Fries are one of those rare foods that go with just about anything. Keep them simple to start, then build from there—seasonings, sauces, or toppings inspired by whatever team you’re rooting for.
  2. Take cues from around the world.
A spread for the world’s biggest tournament practically begs for a little global influence. Try something like poutine with gravy and cheese for Team Canada fans, fries with garlicky aioli and paprika for Team Spain fans, or even a quick kimchi topping for Team Korea fans and you want something with a bit of punch. It doesn’t have to be exact—just aim for the spirit of it.
  3. Don’t skip the classics.
Some of the best things are the simplest. A pile of fries with ketchup, a sandwich stuffed with fries, or something reminiscent of fish and chips—all of it works. Familir flavors tend to disappear fastest, especially with a crowd.
  4. Set up a help-yourself situation.
A DIY fry bar takes the pressure off. Put out a few sauces—maybe garlic mayo, barbecue, something sweet and spicy—and let people mix and match. It’s easy, and everyone gets exactly what they want.
  5. Let the match inspire the menu.
If you’re watching two teams face off, play that up with the food. Do a couple of sauces or toppings tied to each country and see which one gets polished off first—it’s a low-effort way to make things feel a little more interactive.
  6. Have a little fun with it.
Different fry shapes can change things up more than you’d expect. Waffle fries, rounds, or thicker cuts hold toppings well and add some visual interest without extra work.
